Google Educators Group- Cagayan de Oro Inaugural Workshop

We successfully launched the Google Educators Group in Cagayan de Oro yesterday, July 19, 2014 at Liceo de Cagayan University. We launched this group of dynamic and collaborative group of teachers through an Inaugural Workshop wherein teacher-participants learned about the basic Google tools for Education.

Philip Tanpoco Jr, Google Education Outreach Program Manager for Asia Pacific, implemented and ran the workshop from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Participants were able to learn how to use some of the Google apps for education such as the Google Drive, Hangouts and Gmail.

Learning Material: Shoelace Board

Cut and Paste Activity: Where does food come from?

I shared in my previous blog a powerpoint presentation to be used in discussing the topic on "Where does food come from?" After days of going through the topic, I gave an assignment to my students to bring pictures of food to class. 

They brought pictures the next day and my instruction was for them to simply cut the pictures of food and paste them on their notebook and label the food to where it came from. Because this lesson was on Sinugbuanong Bisaya, so they will have to label it "T" if the food comes from Tanom (Plant) and "H" if from Hayop (Animal).

Rather than letting them draw (which they couldn't do perfectly), this is a good alternative.

Worksheet: Missing Numbers 1-10

I really like this worksheet I got at a website I found while searching at Google. The first time my students saw the worksheet, they were amazed by the "snakes".  As you can see, there are missing numbers on the each snake's body and the students are to fill in those missing numbers 1-10 and backwards.
Because I still had time, I let them color the snakes. That's Math and Art in one! :) The kids love doing it.

PPT Presentation: Where does food come from?


My lesson yesterday on Health was on "Where does food come from?" (Asa gikan ang pagkaon?)
Good thing I found these powerpoint presentations on Google which helped me a lot in discussing to my students the concept. 

 
The first presentation was on identifying the source of food, whether plants or animals. It is also in a question-and-answer format so there is really an interaction of students' answers during discussion.
The second presentation was on the food that come from animals.

The third was on the food that come from plants.

All of these presentation came from Food-A Fact of Life which is already available for download.

Not only that,  the site also has an interactive and enjoyable game which can be played by students as they review the lesson at home. You may also use the game if you have an internet connection in the classroom.

Face Shapes


This activity on shapes promotes creativity among children and develops eye-hand coordination. It also shows their learning on the basic shapes. Not only that, they also enjoy doing the activity and compare their art work to their classmates. 

Materials: 
1. Bond Paper
2. Colored Papers
3. Glue
4. Scissors

Procedure:
1. Make sure to introduce the different shapes first. Put a sample of artwork in front. 
2. Have them cut a big circle from one of their colored papers. Paste on a bond paper.
3. Instruct them to cut shapes that will become the different parts of the face. Allow creativity

Color, Cut and Paste Activity for Sinugbuanong Bisaya Letters Ss and Tt

My pupils really enjoy learning when I involve them with activities that allow them to color, cut, and paste.

As my evaluation for letters Ss and Tt, I followed the following procedure:
1. Prepare a worksheet divided into 3 parts. The first part would be on writing the letters. The second part is a two-column table (one column for Ss and another for Tt). The last part would contain pictures black and white of objects with names that starts with Ss and Tt.
2. Instruct the pupils to prepare crayons, scissors, and paste.
3. Tell the pupils to color the pictures first. Allow them to identify the names of the objects.
4. Let the pupils cut each picture and if the object has a name that starts with Ss, the pupils should paste the picture on the Ss column. If the object starts with letter Tt, they should paste the picture at the Tt column.
5. Have them write the letter Ss and Tt for practice.

Duration: 1 hour

Teaching numbers with shapes


Materials needed:
1. a "bingo shapes" card (see photo)
2.  flashcard for each shape (folded)
3. glue
4. crayons

Procedure:
Today, my lesson in Math was on the number 4. For the past few days, my students can already identify and count the first three numbers. I used the following simple yet enjoyable time-on-task activity for kids. It does not only develop the skill of counting numbers but also the eye-hand coordination and coloring skills of the kids. This is also a good review for identifying different shapes.
1. Distribute the bingo shapes card to each students. Tell them to paste the card to their notebooks. Assist students who need help with the glue.
2. Hold the flash cards of shape and fold them in such a way that the kids could not see the shape drawn in each card.
3. Ask the pupils to get the red crayon and raise them.
4. Once you have seen that all the students were able to raise the red crayon, call one child to select a card (the ones that you folded) and let him/her show the card to the classmates. Ask "what shape can you see?"
5. Assuming that the child selected the heart shape, then say "color all the heart shape in your card red".
6. Once the children are done with the coloring, tell them to count the number of hearts. Expected answer is 4.
7. Repeat procedure #s 3 to 6 but use different colors for different shapes. Make sure to let the students count each shape after coloring to emphasize the number 4.

Yarn tracing activity

It's the end of the first week of classes and I would like to share to you a very simple activity to help kids remember letters and sounds, which I did last Tuesday after I taught them the letters "m" "a" and "s". 
I also use this to help students learn the proper way of writing letters and improve their eye-hand coordination.
The kids enjoyed doing the activity too.

1. yarn
2. glue
3. bond paper with written letters
